Jay Gatsby
The protagonist of the novel and the character with the most hype. By the look of the title, you think Gatsby is all sorts of greatness. However you later learn he really isn’t. You learn about his past as a criminal, alcohol smuggler, possibly fixed the world series, a poor soldier, etc. At a young age, Gatsby falls in love with Daisy Buchanan who is wealthy as a teen. Gatsby raises a fortune through illegal acts and essentially is trying to complete his dream of claiming Daisy. Gatsby is also Nicks neighbor…while he lives in a huge mansion Nick lives in a little house. Nick is the distant cousin of Daisy so Gatsby convinced Nick to set them up. Gatsby explains his past through the story and eventually is shot by Wilson.

Nick Carraway
Not only is he the central character, but he is also the narrator. Nick is usually a bit out of the story for being the central character. He is usually just an observer of events and gives his opinions on them. Nick does not give many if any direct effects to the plot, but his words, descriptions, and thoughts detail the story for the reader. He also gives the text tone and mood, especially during the exciting moments. Nick learns a lot about the real world including females, death, economic and social status, and moves away from his old innocent life.
